Anyone with an '03 or earlier model equipped with a flush door latch? Mark Gidley mentioned he saw an '03 Chalet with a more modern flush-style door latch? Since my '04 is apparently evolving backwards to the "older" knob-style, I wonder if anyone else has or have seen the flush latches? I'm curious why Chalet stopped using them, if it was an option, what the brand/model is, etc.

Water strainers...umm...filters. "Consumer Reports, are you listening?" Hi, Dave. CR *did* do a review of filters once. The net result was (as best as I can recall) that, while some are better than others, none did a particularly better job than a "particulate strainer." As always, caveat emptor.

Air Conditioner I am shopping for an Arrowhead and wonder about the factory suggested A/C/ placement under the dinette. It seems like this would make your legs cold while sitting at the dinette and would otherwise not blow in the right direction to provide optimal cooling. Also, wouldn't the vibration from the unit make sleeping in the dinette bed harder (with an A/C running right under the bed)? Also, what are your thoughts on using the outside shower with an enclosure for daily showers while camping? I don't think the inside shower is a realistic option. Seems to take up too much room.

Entrance handle. I just got my brand new 2005 Aurora this morning! While I had been admiring the assist handle you got at Camping World, I was very pleasantly surprised to find an extra handle on the side, next to the door handle, like the one on the roof. Not as spiffy as yours, but I feel it was a very thoughtful touch. I don't know if it's unique to the Trail Boss or not. Oh. And it has that crappy black door handle affair that sticks, too. :-P

winterizing I have recieved winterizing advice that differs from what my Owners manual says. For example, do I use undiluted antifreeze (per advice) or fill the tank half full & then add antifreeze (per manual)?

Should all valves and faucets be closed when I am ready to store it for the winter?

Any other tips?

Thanks

furnace The manual says to always shut off power to the furnace and close the gas shut-off valve each time before using the furnace. Is that right? Where are these on my '03 Aspen?

Seems like just moving the thermostat lever makes the furnace work fine, but I'm new to campers of any kind, so any advice is appreciated.

Odd-ball Shower Idea Know very little about these units as I just started looking to buy one. Got my first look at ALiners yesterday (6 hour ride there and back). Hope to drive 500 miles to view Chalets in a couple of weeks. The showers available on both brands look useless for a 6 foot guy and take up bed space. The outdoor shower would be OK in the summer when it is warm outside and you were in the boonies where folks wouldn't drive by and see things they shouldn't, but otherwise a bad idea. I was wondering if one couldn't tear out the little cabinet next to the door (in front of the A/C on the ALiners) providing for about a 4'x4' floor space. Then, construct some sort of removable shower pan that you carry in your truck. I don't know maybe glass-in a plywood box with sloping floor and a drain or a 48" hard plastic kid's wading pool, or buy a cheap shower stall and cut it to only one foot tall? Then, add a shower curtain that you set up off the roof, and a had operated hose sprayer off the kitchen sink faucet. In fact, a permanantly mounted hand sprayer instead of your extended faucet may be even more to your liking for just every-day kitchen use. It would take a little set-up to use and break back down, but a nice hot shower inside a nice warm trailer might be worth the effort on a week long winter trip.

Purchasing a Chalet in the West Our Research indicates about a 30% markup on popups, but in our discussions with a dealer in Boise, his discount is really paltry. Any recommendations out there for as good dealer who will discount on a new Chalet order, and any tips for negotiating?

Electrical Power Hey Dave. Thanks for the info on tailgate clearance. Wanted to ask you about electrical info., if you have the time. I'm brand new to RVing and have never dealt with this stuff before. Like I said, I am getting the new XL 1930 and as far as DC power goes - my dealer is going to set me up with two six volt batteries (they say it doesn't draw down as quickly and should last about 5 days normal use for dry camping). I don't know about the trickle chargers that come standard - are they alright or not?
We have also thought about doing the sattelite TV thing, so right away I'm thinking I need a generator (Honda EU2000i). Is there an easier and more cost effective way to generate the power required to run normal electical equipment?

Your site is really wonderful. I only discovered it today and both my husband and I have been enjoying it lots. Thank you!

Can you add some detail about the shelving modification? I can't tell (or figure out) how exactly you've hung them from the photo. I'd like to imitate them, but don't know enough.

Door handle replacement Dave,

Thanks for the web site and all your ideas. I have been personalizing my 2004 Aliner since I bought it early last year. The door handle simply drives me nuts and I just ordered the handle as suggested by you. I'll put it on next week when it arrives. I also picked up the rubber door molding and replaced the adhesive backed around the door. Such a good tight seal that the door doesn't latch properly but I'm waiting to replace the door latch assemble before fixing that. Still need to fix that faucet but that is the next project, and add an awning as soon as I find an affordable solution!

Disabling Elixir PS charger circuit to use aux. charger? [This was originally posted on http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/chaletcamping]

Hello all!

As others have posted previously, the stock Elixir charging system on my '04 Arrowhead has proven to be barely adequate - as evidenced by my rapidly-weakening pair of batteries mounted on the tongue. (I realize it's probably 90% my fault as I leave the trailer connected
to shore power in the winter (for dehumidification) and only recently installed a battery disconnect switch to prevent the Elixir charger from boiling them dry)

So I've finally taken the first steps towards "electrical nirvana" by purchasing a Xantrex TrueCharge 20+ charger, remote panel, & temp sensor (got a great deal at Star Marine Depot - $315 for all incl. overnight shipping). Now I need to appeal to all the electronic wizards who frequent this NG (Steve. are U listening?) for some free
advice.

As I see it I have two choices:

1) Disable the Elixir 12-volt charging/power circuit completely and use the TruCharge in it's place. This would effectively make the Elixir a distribution panel for 12 & 120 volt power. But I'm not keen on reducing my fancy charger to a simple transformer!

2) Install a 3-way disconnect switch to allow 12-v. to power the trailer from the batts or Elixir PS (but not both). When connected to shore power I'd switch to the Elixir power circuit for 12-v. (as it works now) and charge the batteries with the TrueCharge (which would now be electrically isolated from that nasty power supply).
When dry camping I'd switch over to the batteries & send 12-v. to the Elixir distribution section.

I'm leaning towards #2 because I could restore all back to stock if I sell the rig & take my TrueCharge with me AND it seems easier. But that's where you guys come in - someone *has* to have faced this challenge before. I thought I read something about this on this NG but a search was fruitless.

Anxiously awaiting the flood of replies,
Dave

Buying a new or used Chalet help I'm taking my Mercedes UniMOG on its last camping season before I sell it and buy a Chalet. Going through this site is what helped me decide. Now, in order to not make too many unoriginal mistakes, I'm seeking advice on just about every phase of buying and setting up one of these puppy's. If anyone has any information that they think will help, please let me know. I haven't decided if I'll go for an older, not too old, model or a new one.

Thanks

What should I modify, change or improve first once I get my Chalet? Dave Smith. I'm the guy with the MOG who is planning on buying a Chalet and I could use some guidence. I'm looking at the XL with some options. My question(s) is/are, what should I modify, change or improve once I get this beast? I've read the things you have done and I can agree with all of them. I just need to know what I should do first. The inverter and the charging of the batteries is a concern of mine right now.
Thanks

Solar Power Dave, thanks so much for your wonderful Chalet site.

Our 2004 Arrowhead is equipped almost the same as yours except we opted for the factory installed AC which does a great job of cooling the frig. I am currently in the process of incorporating your ideas for the GE water filtration system, faucet upgrade and power cord mod.

My top priority is to become as energy independent as possible. Like you, we prefer birds to birdbrains and, therefore, have been investigating hooking up with solar power. I would be interested in your thoughts on a system as offered on "www.partsonsale.com/main.htm"; scroll down to "The Perfect System for Multiple Users". In addition, I plan to change the batteries to two 6v golf carts for optimum storage.

Do you think the average rv dealer could install this package competently?

Thanks for your input.

Sincerely, Ted

THANKS for web site Tahnks for a wonderful web-site. If you are not a member of AOC (Aliner Owner's Club) I'd suggest joining and get a link established to your site. Truly enjoyed every aspect of DIY, trip tips etc.

Have not had time to read all trip itineraries to know if you enjoy dry-camping or not. Some of us are planning a unique AOC caravan plus rally along parts of the pioneer trail with a rally a a very nice lakeside Forest Srvice CG. It would be the 3rd such AOC rally of our special interest group. It always includes an "open house" which translates swap shop for DIY ideas.

shower options I'm reacting to the following: "What are your thoughts on using the outside shower with an enclosure for daily showers while camping? I don't think the inside shower is a realistic option. Seems to take up too much room."

Our Aliner has neither an internal nor exterior shower. For right now we use an exteranl SOLAR shower bag, which works great for dry camping and does not require electricity. We also own a Coleman water-heating untit ($149.-) with a faucet and shower head option powered by butane bottles or LP gas.
While it works well at low altitude at night temperatures of 60 degrees plus, it struggles at higher altitude and night temperatures below 50 degrees, and much worse at freezing night temperatures. The reason is the fact that heats water a certain number of degrees above whatever the starting temperature of the water is. Hence water just above freezing turns out to be cold, not even lukewarm water. It also sucks butante and or LP gas at an incredible rate and water shoots out in overabundant amounts. HENCE, I'm working on using a standard Plastic Jerry can for water (translucent light blue Reliance or similar brand)in conjuction with a shurflow waterpump from a standard battery operated bug sprayer. The 15 gallon bug sprayer tank is too big to take into the "wilderness" but the tank with pump at $84.- at Rural King Farm supply, was a better pump then the stand alone pump at $75.- and it provided mye with an on-off switch, battery hook-up cable and an adjustable sprayer head. The prototype has been tested. Water does warm up on a sunny day and it takes very little battery power to operate it. The adjustable spray head lets you clean your camper & or spray a fine mist. The tiny showerhead from our solar shower simply slips over the spray head and VOILA it resembles a real showerhead, but with frugal use of water. Using a modified extension cord lets you move the shower unit close or far from your camper and you can of course use one of many enclosesures starting at $29.- buck for a hunting blind to something under $200.- .We are eyeballing a unit offered by Cabelas. Hope this provides some options. The Mt.Rendezvous Rally CD's mentioned elsewhere on this web site include pictures of shower house options and other Dry Camping tips including solar panel/controller units at under $400.- & various outdoor cooking units as well as a suggestion to replace the Aliner Sofabed option with an air mattress for more comfort.

furnace pt. 2 i noticed that you bought an oil filled radiator
would you use that in place of the furnace that is factory installed?
i'm looking to buy a new a-liner and the costs are quite steep when you're not a diy'er...
the furnace is $475 [cdn]
the radiator you mentioned sounds like it's quieter and the price is a great saving
thanks...just making sure :)

Detachable power cord modification Dave: To clarify-Did you cut the Chalet delivered 30 amp power cord and insert male and female plugs?

I've been looking for plugs sets and the 30 amp 125 volt ones I have found locally are all four prong models. Your photo shows a three prong model. Does that matter?

Towing a Chalet - equalizer hitch? I will be picking up a Chalet Alpine this summer at the factory, while visiting family on the West Coast (live in Virginia). I'd like to know about towing experiences, particularly whether any of you find an equalizer hitch useful or necessary. If you don't know what that is, you aren't using one, apparently don't need it. The Chalet may weigh over 2000 lbs. loaded for travel, and at least 200 lbs. has to be on the hitch ball. Together with a load of passengers and cargo, that will make the TV back-heavy and front-light, and may cause deterioration of steering stability. My experience has been with my Chevy Astro van towing a Trail Lite 25.5 ft. TT, weighing up to 4900 lbs. (GVWR). I found that keeping the TV level (using the equalizer bars) greatly improved steering stability and reduced sway and fishtailing.
Another possibility is adjustable air bags in the rear suspension, to keep the TV level while towing. This wouldn't transfer load from back to front on the TV, but at least would preserve optimum front suspension geometry.
So, what do you think? Equalizer hitch, air bags, or nothing? The Astro weighs about 5000-6000 lbs. depending on passenger load and cargo, has 10,500 lb. GCWR (with 3.73 rear differential), so is pretty husky. What is your experience?

Buying a Chalet I have a Chalet Alpine bunk model with front storage box on order, thru Danny's Campers in Coloma WI. He had the best price, no hassles. I told him I was planning a trip to Calif and Wash. to visit family in mid June and most of July (retired at only 71), so he asked me if I'd prefer to take delivery at the factory in Albany, OR. I accepted, and he set it up, got the OK from whoever took his order at Chalet, even got a price for "factory prep". Well, he called Chalet later to find out if I could add an outside shower to the order, and was told "By the way, we don't do factory delivery". He told her he'd already checked with the person who took his original order, and he/she had okayed it, even quoted a factory prep price. So she said "Well, OK, but don't do that again".
I'm not sure what the moral of this story is, maybe call at least 3 times for a given order, and take the best 2 out of 3 answers before laying plans. Probably Chalet changed its policy on factory delivery, and didn't tell everybody.
Bottom line: Chalet doesn't do factory delivery, no matter what anybody at Chalet or at the dealer says. Nor do they take orders at the factory, have to order thru a dealer. It's a cruel, cruel world. Dale.

Many thanks for this website Dave - I've written before but wanted to again say THANK YOU for this awesome site. We are Aliner owners in the southeast (originally northern californians). I check this site regularly and have incorporated so many of your modifications. Today I am attempting to install my new door handle and the osram lights!
This is all so well documented I feel we should pay a subscription.
Thanks again for all your time and effort!!!!

Dale's 2006 Alpine Critique Dave,
I was looking at your rants and raves, noting what applied to my 2006 Alpine. Here’s a summary of how the 2006 model rates:

1. Sliding table - mine is fixed, has a rounded end, so one can slip in either side without moving the table.
2. Awning rail rubbing ridge rail - must have changed the design, I don’t think there is an awning rail.
3. Door seal - seems OK. However, at the bottom of the door at one corner, the free end of the seal was peeling off, so I glued it back on.
4. N/A
5. Fridge too low - not for me, but I don’t have a rug., don’t plan to have any, easier cleaning.
6. Awning rail cuts welt - again, must have changed design, but I haven’t deployed the awning since the guy at Chalet showed me how it’s done. Not sure I remember how.
7. N/A
8. Faucet too small & low - right on. I want to find one like yours which can be raised and lowered without being removed and replaced all the time.
9. Furnace wastes space - it’s in a good placement from operational standpoint, maybe it could have been mounted higher or lower, put a small cabinet in the remaining space.
10. N/A
11. N/A
12. N/A
13. N/A
14. Thermostat location - mine is near the corner of the sink cabinet, facing the rear L/H dinette seat. Works OK for me.
15. Door latch - Chalet uses a different type, not flush mount, but low profile plastic job with push buttons instead of knobs, looks nice. But the inner and outer parts are clamped together with two bolts thru the door, and it can shift out of position. Need a couple of locating studs in matching holes in the door.
16. Bike rack receiver - mine is mounted like yours, is 12 inches above ground, hasn’t hit anything yet. Maybe your trailer is nose high so the rear end is too low?
17. Rear baggage door - mine has screws in all four corners in addition to the adhesive sealant.
18. Not mentioned by you, but Chalet has addressed the wind problem (in the erected condition) by installing a couple of bolts which protrude from the front side rails of the 2 sidewalls into mating holes in the side rails of the front roof member. We’ll see how that works, don’t know if they’ve tested it in actual high wind situation. That doesn’t help at all with erecting the roof in the wind, obviously.

Here are some of my own rants (2006 Alpine bunk model w/front storage box):

1. Didn’t want the Chalet A/C, it’s location is bad. My dealer installed a small 5000 BTU A/C ala Aliner in top of cabinet next to door, works well. I can still use the whole cabinet, with the top drawer shortened a few inches, and openings in the sides of the cabinet for the air intake, which is below the cabinet top. The A/C projects 6.5 inch outside, it’s up high enough that it shouldn’t be a problem. Haven’t heard complaints from Aliner owners about that.
2. Roof is very hard to raise, I don’t think anyone much shorter than I am (5’11”) could do it without standing on a bench, and takes a lot of strength. Maybe the springs are a little weak. Also could be the extra height (bunk incl. high sidewall), have to push up the rear half from near the hinge, would be much easier if one were further away from the hinge, more leverage, but have to reach higher than I can.
3. Only one 110VAC circuit for all the receptacles and fridge - the other circuit is for the converter, which uses only a few amps, doesn’t need its own circuit. Fridge, converter and left hand plugs could have been on one circuit, because the fridge only uses 1.5 amp on AC, and the converter only uses 3-5 amps @ 110VAC. The right hand plugs (which the A/C uses) could use the other circuit. I added a 3rd circuit for the R/H plugs with the A/C.
4. Need a light at one end of the dinette for reading in bed. The existing lights are OK for general lighting, but they’re in the middle of the ceiling.
6. Chalet should install a waste receptacle on the inside of the door - I’m probably going to do that myself. It would be a very nice touch. Anything on the floor is just too much underfoot.
7. I’m surprised they didn’t include a safety rail for the upper bunk - it’s such an obvious need.
8. The sink drain tubing is a piece of junk, and had a puncture in the middle where it sags. Even if I fixed the puncture, it drained very slowly because of the sag. I replaced it with a piece of radiator tubing, which has a preform bend at just the right place to make a straight run to the external drain fitting. Drains much faster now, and no leaks.
9. The front storage box leaks in the rain. My dealer said all of them do whether Aliner or Chalet (he sells both), it seems to be in the design. He advises his customers to put everything in zip-lock bags. Chalet advised me not to overtighten the closures, because that leads to cracks in the box. So, I have to find some way to fix the leak problem. Maybe some type of automotive trunk lid seals would work better than the hollow tube type Chalet uses. I once fixed a similar problem in my old 25 ft. TT front storage by putting weatherproof 2 inch wide adhesive tape across the hinge area, so water didn’t run down into the drain channel around the seal. It flexed with the hinge when opened, did the job.
10. This Chalet has 350 lb. hitch weight EMPTY (front box, 2 batteries, 2 LP tanks), absolutely requires WD hitch for light duty TVs like my Toyota Sienna wagon/minivan. It has 3500 lb. tow limit which is OK, but only allows 350 lb. hitch weight, which will certainly be exceeded when the trailer is loaded. Fortunately, Sienna is one of the few minivans which allows WD hitch, raises hitch weight allowance to 525 lbs. Chalet needs to make this known, and ensure that dealers watch for it when someone comes in with a front wheel drive TV looking for a suitable camper. Even many crossover SUVs have similar weight limits.

Enough for now. Despite the above, I really like this camper, it’s so easy to tow, and easy to set up, and with the bunk, has room for 4 kids and Grandpa. With the Portapotty, outside shower, outside grill hookup, and the awning (if I can ever figure out how to deploy it), we can have lots of fun .
Dale.

Door issues , nut and screw issues, and tire issues. First, I really enjoyed finding your website. I am going to mark it as a favorite as I believe new ideas will continue to come in. I have a 2003 Aurora Chalet. My biggest problem at first was my door. It was just to small. By replacing it, they still did not make it fit the space properly. I will try your door seal idea. I noticed the screws around the heater seal and the nuts were rusting badly. For a couple dollars I rep[laced them all with stainless. The cost is small but the benefits really pay off as the trailer gets older. I am starting my third set of tires already and 6 to 7,000 miles is all I seem to be able to get.Elmo Layman9/16/2006 8:21 AM

Electrical Hi Dave,

Great website. I just purchased a used 2005 Alpine. I drove from NY to Wisconsin to pick it up (40 hour road trip). Anyway, I need to modify the electrical system so I can use the Chalet as my mobile office in remote locations.

So for starters I purchased two Trojan T-105 6V golf cart batteries. The battery bank will produce 225AH at 12 volts. One system that I'm thinking of using is a Xantrex Truestat 20+ charger with a 1000 watt inverter. I studied your wiring schematic and have one question. When shore power is not available and you're hooked up using the inverter, it looks like you have created a loop feeding the 12VDC distribution panel from both the inverter and the batteries, going from 12VDC to 120 VAC back to 12VDC when feeding through the 120VAC input. Why don't you have a switch between the line going from the ELX-20 120VAC distribution panel and the 12VDC power supply?

Thanks for your expertise.

Fridge Not Getting Cold Hi there. I have a 2001 Chalet Arrowhead. Unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to use it over the last 2 years, but now have the itch again. For some reason the Domestic 3 way fridge in it doesn't get cold now. Any idea what the problem could be and how to fix it? Thanks for any help you can pass along.

I just have to know... Dave,

I love your trailer & you're passion. This website is a work of art as well, all laid out with what you did to your Chalet. I just have to know though, how much money have you put into this thing ?? With all the work you've done, it has to be a ton of money. When i eventually get one, I know it wont be near as trick as yours, but I like to know that there are great websites like this that will help me along the way if ( more like when ) i get stuck on a project.

Thanx

Some curtains too tight - can't clip shut. Hi guys! Thanks so much for sharing your experiences with your trailer.

I had one thought regarding your "Rant" about the curtains being just a bit too narrow to close properly. Maybe you could find some coordinating fabric and/or trim & sew around one or both edges as a border. It would allow you to customize interior look, and also add a bit of fabric to keep the curtains shut. I might be inclined to do the inside edge and the bottom... so the trim border shows nicely when you have the curtain open.

Don't know if it's still an issue for you or not, but would certainly be an easy fix, compared with the other engineering projects you've undertaken.

Thanks again for sharing...

Bungee cords snapped, front storage bin stress fractures I have a 2006 Arrowhead. I LOVE it. So easy for one person to tow, set up, take down, etc. However, I do have a couple questions. Has anyone had the bungee cords break? Both of mine snapped, and after I looked at them, they look like they had some dry rot. Do you feel they are truly necessary, and how would you replace them?
My unit has the front end storage bin. I noticed several 'stress fractures' on the curved part going toward the piano hinge. I will be glad to email pics, as it is hard to explain. Has anyone else had such problems with the storage bin?
Any replys would be greatly appreciated.

A-Liner vs Chalet , Fiberglass vs Aluminum, Help?! Howdy All!
We are avid campers and backpackers, and my wife and I are just beginning to look at A-liners and Chalets.

We thought we had done our homework and settled on the Chalet, but when we went to actually look at one (the A-liner) we were told that the fiberglass Chalets are a no-no in sun-soaked southern California. We looked at an aluminum A-Liner Expedition and were impressed with the features.

Now that you have used yours for a while, do you have any brief words of advice?

We have yet to actually see a Chalet, since the closest dealer is 100 miles away.

We will be pulling it with a 6-cyl Toyota 4Runner.

What's the pro's/con's of aluminum or fiberglass??!!
Thanks!

roof lifter issues... I love your site! Great work with your mods. Although I'm an Aliner owner, I think my question will work with Chalets as well.
I bought a well used A. I've tried to replace the roof lifters to the tune of over $500 without success. I tried the parent company (now Columbia) and Suspa, Inc, and EasyLift--no luck. I want to try the spring lifter I've seen instead of the "gas" struts I've tried. Any suggestions?
Thanks for any info.

Wheel Lock ("~ the Club") for Chalet I apologize if this has been addressed previously.

Problems with new Chalet Arrowhead....Please help! Front Door won't close!!!

Has anyone had this problem...

We had our 2007 Chalet Arrowhead parked for a week in the hot 100-degree Arizona weather (it was not popped-up). When we went to pop it up today, the front door (and arch) was hard to open, and now they won't close when the Chalet is popped-down and ready to be driven away.. The opening is too small (or the door is too big). We are about to head out on a trip tomorrow morning...., but now we are heading to a local Chalet dealer service center tomorrow to see what can be done (this is still under the warrantee).

We have it popped-up now (the doors fit ‘ok’, still a wee tight), but when we close it up, the doors won’t fit. We will try it again in a few hours, but has anyone ever had this problem.
In addition, the wall behind the sink was unable to latch on the front side of the Chalet. It seems that the entire wall has bowed like a ‘U’ from being closed for the past week. We had to push really hard on the apex of the wall to get that one latch closed.

The Chalet manufacture told us that these should be stored popped-up, NOT put away popped-down?!

Any ideas will be appreciated.

Chalet Skylights: Problem We have a 2007 Chalet Arrowhead that we purchased new in May 2007.
We just noticed that the rear large lexan bubble skylight is extremely foggy and hazy, but the front skylight is fine. We used our Chalet 6 weeks ago and both windows were fine. After washing the Chalet last week, one of the skylights is uniformly hazy. There wasn't anything that I did to this skylight that I didn't do to the other one. Any ideas?? I have a feeling that a fading/cloudy skylight is NOT covered under the 1-year warranty. I tried washing a small portion of the skylight with water, and also windex, but no change. Any suggestions? Thanks,

30 amp external mains power I was so impressed with your idea on the wasted storage where the external power cord is located, I immediately went out to Home Depot and purchased a male and female plug. This is what I got and the prices.
L630-PCCV3 Turnlock Plug $18.90
L630-CCCV3 Turnlock Connector $34.73
Total including Tax $57.12

As soon as the snow melts, I'll do the installation. Such a great idea.
Question...Do you think the manufactures read and note these ideas?

Awesome!!! Dave & Kristi:

I was just surfing -- trying to get some idea about how Chalet owners rated their camper when I found your awesome site. A Chalet (either a new XL 1920 or Alpine -- want a bath/toilet, but also want bunks) is definitely on our short list. I bookmarked your site because if and when we buy you sure have a great set of mods with totally comprehensible instructions that I would certainly want to accomplish. I think your website is great -- one of the best I've found.

Where to put larger Porta Potti? I took delivery of a 2009 Arrowhead with the permanent double bed (and great access to lots of storage underneath the bed).

However, the small Porta Potti (about 10 litres cap.) that came with our trailer would only last about 3 1/2 nights for us, based on our experience. We have a larger model 365 Porta Potti (about 20 litres) which provides us enough capacity for about 1 week.

During our first trip, I stored the 20 litre potti under the front dinette seat. However, it was uncomfortable to use in this position, as it had to be lower than the dinette perimeter to allow the MDF cover board to fit over it during travel. Also, our table makes it awkward to sit on the potti, while have to remove and replace the MDF cover board, and the seat and back cushions every day (and find somewhere to store them) is a pain.

So I am looking a cutting an access door through the 3/4" panel at the end of the dinette which is on the right-hand side as you enter the trailer. This door would allow us to just slide out the potti at night into the space by the door.

I am aware of the structural important of this panel in supporting the dinette, as well the fact that it has long screws in it anchoring the outside door handle. I intend to use appropriate bracing to compensate for the removal of the bottom 1x2 inch bottom board next to this panel, as well as the cutout of a portion of the panel for an access door.

I would appreciate advice from anyone who has tried this modification, or can suggest a more convenient way to store and access a large Porta Potti.

Regards,

Michael Sinclair

Moving our Chalet in a Campground While up We had a chance to move to a better site after our second day at our site. We were not happy with the site we were in - pretty muddy and we have dogs. We didn't want to take everything down to move but also did not want to move the Chalet without finding out if had been done before. Very level site - would move very slowly - POSSIBLE???

Cant seem to get the top to strech tight not to mention how do you get the floor sealed up to actually keep out critters and bugs? It is very spendy for such a let down. I would like to hear anymore related coments.

Chalet 2002 Alpine Trail Boss Skylight window leaks All four of the 22" X 22" skylight window leak water when raining.

Does any one know if the exiting skylight can be removed, clean off all caulking and reassemble with new caulking or do you have to by new skylights?

I would also like to know if anyone has replaced the skylights with insulation fill and a flat outside sheet of metal or fiberglass and seal with silcone caulking?

Thanks,

Bob

Sofa/Bed Bunk modifications Regarding the modification you did to the sofa bed, do you have measurements and/or plans that you are willing to share?Charlie Beecher4/26/2010 8:21 AM
Top hinge replacement We purchased our neighbor's Chalet after is has been sitting for years. The hinges on the top halves are just about frozen. Has anyone replaced them? I could use a tip or 2.

He also replaced some of the floor but the front part is pretty bad also. I guess that I took on a big project.

Specific part Number for door replacement seal I have looked through the 3 pages the company sent me to try and locate the seal that was used in your replacement post... I am not that savvy at figuring things out and could not discern which was the one used... the one I saw that I thought looked close seemed like it would be too thick to fit properly. Can anyone help me locate the correct seal to search for?
I have attempted to attach the catalog files they sent me. I hope they work! Thank you in advance and that you very much for all the handy information on your website!
